Going from Bali to Labuan Bajo for a Komodo trip means a flight of about 1 hour 10 minutes, according to Solo Nomads, into an airport about 2 km from town, per Wikivoyage. The hard part is fitting it around the boat. One operator advises arriving the day before, and day-three return times make same-day flights tight.

How long is the flight from Bali to Labuan Bajo for a Komodo trip?

Solo Nomads puts it at about 1 hour 10 minutes; check the time with your airline, as this is a travel guide's figure. You land at Komodo Airport (LBJ), which Wikipedia describes as having a 2,750 m runway and handling 1,017,995 passengers in 2024, citing Indonesia's civil aviation directorate. That is a sizeable regional airport and not an airstrip.

Origins differ a little by source. Wikivoyage lists links with Denpasar, Jakarta and others, plus international routes to Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Lonely Planet lists Jakarta, Bali, Lombok and Kuala Lumpur, without Singapore. Neither source is a timetable, and routes change, so check the airlines themselves before you plan around a particular flight.

For how the airport fared after the August 2026 earthquake, see our Komodo 3D2N FAQ, and confirm the current position when you book.

Should you fly in on the morning of sailing?

It is possible on paper and risky in practice. Labuan Bajo Tourism, an operator, suggests planning four days in total when flying from Bali, arriving the day before. Published pickups are in the morning, as the Komodo 3D2N itinerary shows, so a same-day arrival depends on an early flight running on time. Before you try it, ask the seller directly whether the boat will wait, and what you lose if it does not. Luggage is a further catch. Seek Sophie, a booking platform, tells guests to leave big luggage at the hotel and bring a small bag, which is hard to do if you land that morning and head straight for the boat.

Also check the day of the week before you buy flights. Departure days are often fixed: Seek Sophie, a booking platform, says most 3-day trips leave on Fridays with a few on Mondays; Green Rinjani, an operator, departs Monday and Friday; and Phinisi Trip, another operator, lists Friday and Monday starts. A private boat may work differently, so ask, but on these shared departures the sailing date will likely choose your flight and not the other way round. Book the boat in writing first, then the flights.

Should you fly in on the morning of sailing?
PlanDays neededWhere the risk sits
Fly in on sailing morning, fly out on return day3Both flights depend on near-perfect timing
Arrive the day before, fly out on return day (the four-day plan Labuan Bajo Tourism suggests)4The return flight
Arrive the day before, stay one more night5Lowest flight risk; more hotel cost

The nights on either side deserve their own thought, and planning the days around the boat covers what to do with them.

Can you fly out the day you return?

Longlasting Trip, a Viator supplier, said yes, adding that guests could take an afternoon flight or stay another night, and the margin is yours to judge. Return times by seller are listed in the Komodo 3D2N itinerary.

Labuan Bajo Tourism's four-day plan also implies flying out on the day the boat returns. The buffer is your call. A boat due at 13:00 that runs an hour late leaves very little time for a flight in early afternoon, and the short distance to the airport does not help if your bag is still on the boat. A later flight is safer. A night in town is safer still, particularly if you have an onward international connection from Bali the same day, where a missed domestic leg gets expensive.

Closures are a separate risk. The harbourmaster can stop boats altogether, which can upset both ends of a tight plan, and what happens during a sailing ban explains how that plays out. Ask what your seller does, and check whether your flight can be changed.

How far is the airport from the harbour?

Wikivoyage says the airport is 2 km from town. Ask your seller for the transfer time to the harbour. The more useful question is who handles it. Sellers describe hotel pickups, as the published times show, but an airport pickup is a different thing. Ask whether one is included, or whether you are expected to reach the hotel or the harbour on your own, and get the answer in writing with the meeting point.

What entry paperwork applies?

If you are flying in from abroad, the official pages are the ones to follow. Indonesia's immigration site says the visa on arrival allows a first stay of up to 30 days, extendable once for another 30, and eligibility depends on nationality. The e-visa site says travellers need a passport valid at least six months from arrival. The official visa fee is in the price table on this page; check it at source, since it can change.

Fragomen, a law firm, reports that the All Indonesia digital arrival form can be completed up to three days before arrival. The airports named in that notice do not include Labuan Bajo, so if you plan to enter the country directly at LBJ, on a flight from Kuala Lumpur for example, confirm what applies there. These points can change at short notice, and this site cannot advise on your individual case.

Passport details matter for the boat as well. Samara, a boat operator, says park tickets are bought with them, and one Viator supplier required passport name, number and nationality when booking. Check that the name on your flights matches the one you give the seller.

Which published prices did we check?

Official fees and public third-party listings, each with its source and the month we checked it. These are not our prices or offers. Listings show starting prices that change often, operator figures are the operator's own, and what each price includes differs, so check the source before you rely on a figure.
