A Komodo 3D2N boat is not a standard product, and the word phinisi will not tell you what you are getting. Deck level, cabin type, air conditioning, generator position and passenger count shape your two nights aboard, and they vary by vessel. Get those details in writing for the specific boat before you pay.

What does the word phinisi tell you about a Komodo 3D2N boat?

Less than most listings imply. Wikipedia's entry on the pinisi says the word names a type of rig, not a hull shape, and that it is now used loosely for most wooden Indonesian ships. You will see it spelled phinisi on trip listings and pinisi in that entry. Because the label is applied so widely, it is neither a safety grade nor a comfort grade, and two boats sold under it can differ in almost every way that affects your stay.

Sellers also use cruise, sailing trip and liveaboard for overlapping products, as the listing titles in the price table on this page show. None of those words defines a class of vessel. A more useful way to sort boats is by how the sleeping space works. Seek Sophie, a booking platform, says some boats mix shared dorm rooms with private en-suite rooms, while others offer only private rooms. If you are comparing shared departures, our guide to the Komodo open trip on a 3D2N explains how those trips are sold.

How do deck levels change a cabin?

Deck level changes daylight, engine proximity and price. The Flying Nomads, travel bloggers writing from their own trip, say boats usually offer upper, main and lower deck cabins, with lower cabins costing less, sometimes lacking a window and sitting closer to the engine. That is one personal account, so read it as a guide and not a rule.

The question of upper deck or lower deck comes down to whether the saving is worth a possible loss of daylight and a berth nearer the machinery. Do not assume an upper cabin is quiet by default, because the generator can be placed elsewhere on the boat. Ask for a deck plan or a photograph of the actual cabin, and ask what sits directly below or beside it.

Operator claims need the same care. Labuan Bajo Tourism, an operator, says every cabin on its two boats has air conditioning and an en-suite, with price set by size, deck and view. That statement covers those two boats and tells you nothing about any other vessel in the harbour. The boat is one part of the decision, and our Komodo 3D2N overview shows how it sits beside route, season and cost.

How many people will be on board?

Published numbers vary enough that you should ask for yours. Komodo Touristic, an operator's site, lists a shared 3D2N boat launched in 2025 with 32 to 35 passengers in 12 cabins, departing on Fridays. Longlasting Trip, a supplier on Viator, capped one shared listing at 10 travellers. Green Rinjani reports 12 to 16 on its shared trips. We quote these to show the spread and do not recommend any of them.

A boat's maximum and the number booked on your date are different figures, so ask for both. The ratio of guests to cabins is useful too: it tells you quickly whether a boat relies on shared rooms to reach its headcount.

What should you expect for sleep and noise?

Expect a compact room and mechanical noise. Seek Sophie warns that rooms are not big and that some sit near a generator running through the night, and it suggests ear plugs and a small bag. Wikivoyage goes further, reporting engine noise on all boats and also suggesting earplugs. Our packing list for a Komodo boat trip covers what to bring for this.

One blog's complaint is heat. Groovy Mashed Potatoes, a travel blog, chose a boat without air conditioning and found the cabin so hot they slept on deck. One trip is not a rule, but it shows why the answer matters. A cabin described as air-conditioned can still leave you with a question about whether the system runs all night or only while the generator does.

Power is limited as well. The Flying Nomads say most boats have limited outlets, and that their own boat had cabin power around the clock. Treat that second detail as true of that boat alone.

  • Is there air conditioning in my cabin, and does it run through the night?
  • Where is the generator, and how far is it from my berth?
  • Does my cabin have a window?
  • How many outlets are in the cabin, and is power on at all hours?
  • May guests sleep on deck if the cabin is too warm?

What do boats serve and supply?

Published trips include meals, though the count differs by seller. Seek Sophie lists 2 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 3 dinners for a three-day trip, and Longlasting Trip on Viator lists 2 breakfasts, 3 lunches and 2 dinners. The gap is one dinner, so ask for the meal plan by day. Dietary needs are not addressed in any general way by these sources, and that makes a written request the only safe route.

Beach dinners are out, since the park protocol bars set-ups, barbecues and cooking on shore. A sales photo of a beach barbecue within park boundaries is worth questioning before you pay.

For water, Lonely Planet says most boats have drinking water to top up and that alcohol usually costs extra, so a refillable bottle is a sensible default. Seek Sophie adds that most 3-day boats carry a photographer who shares photos afterwards; ask whether that is part of the fare on your boat. If your room is not en-suite, ask how many guests share each toilet and shower.

Is there phone signal or Wi-Fi on board?

Maika Komodo Tour, an operator, says Wi-Fi is generally not available and that limited mobile signal may appear near some islands, so guests should expect to be offline at sea. Salam Ransel, also an operator, calls signal limited around the islands and says Telkomsel has the best coverage in Flores. Those are two sellers describing conditions, not a coverage map, and neither promises anything on a given route. Download tickets, maps and your written programme before you board, and tell anyone expecting to hear from you that you may be out of touch for two days.

Which claims about boats cannot be verified?

Several common ones. Seek Sophie suggests choosing natural wood over boats painted white, on the grounds of build quality. That is one platform's opinion, so do not use it as a test of anything. This site does not rank vessels.

The same applies to licences and seaworthiness. To confirm a specific boat's papers, ask the seller to state them in writing. Our page on Komodo boat trip safety sets out what the public record does show. For how listed fares compare, read the price table on this page alongside our Komodo 3D2N cost guide, because what each published fare includes differs. Once a boat looks right, test it against the Komodo 3D2N itinerary, the Komodo 3D2N route it sails and the Komodo 3D2N booking checklist.

What do travellers ask about Komodo boats?

Is phinisi a type of boat?

Strictly, no. Wikipedia describes pinisi as a type of rig rather than a hull shape and notes the word now covers most wooden Indonesian ships. On a Komodo trip it works as a sales label, so ask about the specific vessel.

How many passengers on a Komodo boat?

It depends on the boat. One supplier on Viator capped a shared listing at 10 travellers, Green Rinjani reports 12 to 16, and Komodo Touristic lists a shared boat for 32 to 35. Ask how many guests are booked on your date.

Do Komodo boats have air conditioning?

Some do, and you should not assume it. Labuan Bajo Tourism says all cabins on its two boats have it, while the travel blog Groovy Mashed Potatoes describes a boat without it and a cabin too hot to sleep in. Confirm it for your cabin.

What is sleeping on a Komodo boat like?

Seek Sophie warns that rooms are not big. Seek Sophie and Wikivoyage both raise noise and both suggest earplugs, and The Flying Nomads mention limited outlets. Cabin position can affect how much of this reaches you.

Do Komodo boats have a toilet and shower?

Seek Sophie describes private en-suite rooms on some boats and shared dorm rooms on others, so the answer depends on what you book. If the bathroom is outside your room, ask how many guests use it.

Which published prices did we check?

Official fees and public third-party listings, each with its source and the month we checked it. These are not our prices or offers. Listings show starting prices that change often, operator figures are the operator's own, and what each price includes differs, so check the source before you rely on a figure.
