Komodo boat trip safety has no single score. Antara reports at least 15 tourist boat accidents in the area from 2024 through the end of 2025, mostly from weather or technical faults, with no rate per trip. Harbourmaster guidance sets duties for boats, and you can ask about them in writing. Nobody can guarantee any one sailing.

How many accidents have been reported?

Antara, Indonesia's national news agency, reports at least 15 tourist boat accidents recorded in the area from 2024 through the end of 2025, mostly off Padar, Komodo and Rinca, and primarily from weather or technical faults. "At least" is Antara's own qualifier.

That count cannot tell you how likely an accident is. A risk figure would need the number of boats and trips over the same period, which these reports leave out. A count of 15 could mean something quite different in a fleet of hundreds than in a smaller one. So be wary of anyone, in either direction, who turns that number into a claim that these waters are safe or dangerous. It shows that accidents do happen, in the places a 3D2N itinerary goes, for reasons that include both sea and machinery.

What happened in the Padar Strait in December 2025?

KM Putri Sakinah, carrying 11 people, sank in the Padar Strait on the night of 26 December 2025, according to the harbourmaster. Preliminary findings cited by Antara say the semi-phinisi lost its engine between Kalong and Padar and was struck by high waves. The harbourmaster described the swell as 2 to 3 metres, arriving suddenly and lasting a short period, half an hour to an hour.

West Manggarai Police opened an investigation that included the boat's seaworthiness and its compliance with safety procedures. No final finding has been reported in the sources cited, so the account above remains preliminary. This page draws no conclusion about what caused the sinking or who, if anyone, was at fault.

What a traveller can fairly take from it is limited: both an engine failure and a short, sudden swell were part of the early account, and the stretch named lies between stops that published 3D2N samples also use.

What does the harbourmaster require of boats?

The fullest public summary is guidance reported by Antara in October 2024. It tells boat managers to:

  • meet seaworthiness requirements, with a statement from the boat's master;
  • check the weather at least six hours before sailing;
  • make sure passenger names match the manifest and capacity is not exceeded;
  • carry enough safety equipment for everyone aboard, including fire extinguishers;
  • have people wear life jackets on the tender.

The same guidance says the harbourmaster can withhold sailing approval if risky components are found. Two later reports show the rules being applied. In January 2026 the harbourmaster barred night vessel movement in park waters, especially at risk points such as the Padar Strait, while saying three-day, two-night packages could continue without it. Whether that limit still applies when you travel is something to ask. A captain's licence was suspended for three weeks in August 2026 for sailing during a ban, Antara reported.

Sailing bans are therefore part of the safety system as well as a disruption to plans. What a sailing ban does to your trip covers the practical side. Published requirements describe what boats are told to do. They do not show whether any particular boat does it.

What can you check yourself on Komodo boat trip safety?

Less than you would like. Harbourmaster duties are reported, but be wary of anyone who promises you can verify a specific boat's licence online. What you can do is ask in writing and keep the answer. A seller who answers specifically has told you something. So has one who avoids the question.

Before paying, ask:

  • What is the boat's passenger capacity, and how many will be aboard on your date?
  • How many life jackets are carried, and are there sizes for children if you need them?
  • Will your name appear on the manifest, and what details do they need from you?
  • Who checks the weather, and when, before each sailing?
  • Does the boat move after dark on this itinerary, and if so, where?
  • What happens if the harbourmaster withholds approval on your sailing date?

Once aboard, look for the life jackets, ask for a briefing if none is offered, and wear a jacket on the tender. The Flying Nomads, a travel blog, report life jackets and a safety briefing on their boat, but that is one traveller's account and not a general standard. The Komodo 3D2N booking checklist sets these alongside questions on price and terms. Feeling unwell at sea is a separate matter from vessel safety, and it has its own page on reducing seasickness risk.

What does government travel advice say?

The UK government warns that boat travel in Indonesia can be dangerous and that standards vary. It tells travellers to check life jackets and lifeboats and to avoid travel after dark unless satisfied with the vessel. The advice covers Indonesia as a whole and is not specific to Komodo. Read your own government's current advice too, and ask your insurer how it treats boat trips, since this page cannot speak for any policy.

What do people ask about safety on Komodo boats?

Are Komodo boats safe?

There is no honest yes or no. Standards vary, as UK government advice says of Indonesian boats generally, and at least 15 tourist boat accidents were recorded in the area from 2024 through 2025, according to Antara. The question that can be answered is what a particular seller will state in writing about a particular boat.

Is a Komodo liveaboard safe?

We do not rank named boats. An overnight trip does raise one extra question: whether the boat moves after dark, which the harbourmaster barred in park waters in January 2026. Ask how your itinerary handles this.

How many boat accidents in Komodo?

Antara reports at least 15 tourist boat accidents from 2024 through the end of 2025, mostly off Padar, Komodo and Rinca. It is a minimum count and not a rate, and a total for 2026 is not available here.

Do Komodo boats carry life jackets?

October 2024 harbourmaster guidance reported by Antara says safety equipment must suffice for everyone and life jackets must be worn on the tender. That is what boats are told to do. Check them yourself, as UK advice suggests.

What safety equipment should a Komodo boat have?

The reported guidance names sufficient safety equipment for all aboard, life jackets for tender use and fire extinguishers. UK government advice also mentions lifeboats. Ask the seller to list what is carried on your boat.

How do I reach the desk?

General questions about this page can go to the desk on WhatsApp +62 811-3823-875 or by email. It cannot certify a boat or promise a safe sailing. Requests through the desk can lead to a paid booking, so we have a commercial interest, and you should weigh our replies with that in mind.
