The best time for Komodo 3D2N depends on which risk you would rather carry, because no single month wins. December to March has the heaviest rain and the likeliest sailing stops. Later months trade that for heat, browner hills and, in some accounts, fewer dragon or manta encounters. Late-year quota limits are a separate check.

What is the best time for Komodo 3D2N if weather risk comes first?

Going on rainfall alone, the middle of the year is the driest. Weather2Travel averages show about 396 mm of rain at Labuan Bajo in January against about 28 mm in July, and daily sunshine rising from 5 hours in January and February to 9 in September and October. Lonely Planet calls December to March the short wet season and advises avoiding January to March because some boat operators stop running trips.

Low rain does not make those months the right answer for everyone. Each stretch of the year gives something up:

MonthsWhat you gainWhat you give up
December to MarchGreen hills (Lonely Planet). Seek Sophie, a booking platform, calls this manta seasonHeaviest rain. The harbourmaster is most likely to stop boats, says Komodo Resort, an operator
April to JuneLonely Planet rates April to June for dragons as vegetation dies backLonely Planet also says sightings get less common in June and July, so June sits on both sides
July to SeptemberLeast rain, with July at about 28 mm (Weather2Travel)Brown hills. Wikivoyage reports extreme heat in August and September. Seek Sophie says manta sightings are especially uncertain
October and NovemberAbout 9 hours of sun in October (Weather2Travel)November: about 193 mm and 12 days with some rain, against about 99 mm and 4 days in October (Weather2Travel)

For the month-by-month numbers, go to Labuan Bajo weather by month. Heat is one place the sources openly disagree: Wikivoyage says the park is extremely hot and dry, over 40°C, in August and September, while Weather2Travel's averages show daytime highs of 31 to 32°C through the year. An average and a description of the worst days can both be true, but they plan differently. If you are still weighing the format itself, our Komodo 3 days 2 nights overview comes before the calendar.

Why do sailing bans matter more than rain?

A wet afternoon costs you a view. A closure can cost you the trip. Komodo Resort, an operator, expects harbourmaster stops most often from December to March and names wind as the main risk. That is one operator's view, though it lines up with Lonely Planet's warning about the same months.

The rule is not theoretical. CNN Indonesia reported a further closure for tourist vessels running to 4 February 2026, with tourism operators protesting against it. A two-night boat has very little give in a case like that. Someone with a fortnight in Flores has more room to wait out a closure, though the early 2026 closures ran for weeks; someone with four days and a return flight probably cannot.

Rain tables also do not measure wind. A month with modest rainfall can still have rough water, so the 28 mm figure tells you about getting wet and not about whether you will sail. If you are considering the wet months anyway, read the rainy-season trade-offs first, and look at your written terms for what happens to your money if the harbourmaster closes the water. In the same report, ASITA's provincial head blamed the lack of standard refund rules for big problems, so read your written terms.

How does the season change wildlife timing?

For dragons, Lonely Planet says April to June is good because vegetation dies back, and that sightings are less common in June and July. The overlap in June is a useful reminder that this is a rough pattern and not a calendar.

Mantas are where sources pull apart. The Marine Megafauna Foundation reports 1,085 individual manta rays identified in the park and says they are present year-round. Seek Sophie says manta season is the rainy months of December to March and warns that sightings are not guaranteed, especially from July to September. The two statements are not quite the same claim: one concerns whether the animals live there, the other whether a tourist boat tends to meet them. For what a stop involves, see Manta Point on a boat trip. No season guarantees an encounter with either animal.

Then there is the look of the place. Lonely Planet says the hillsides turn green in the short wet season and that dry months brown them. If your picture of Padar is a green ridge, that points you towards the riskier sailing months, which is an uncomfortable trade to make with only two nights.

How does the quota change peak months?

It adds a second reason a date can fail that has nothing to do with weather. The 2026 annual quota was used up by August, CNN Indonesia reported, and a written adjustment followed on 22 September. Reports then read that adjustment differently: Kompas describes an extra 500 visitors a day on top of the regular 1,000 for September to December 2026, while CNN Indonesia reads it as a maximum of 500 a day for the same period. Confirm the current figure with the park authority or your operator. The visitor quota guide explains what the limit means for a trip.

The practical point is that pressure may not sit where you expect. Monthly visitor counts do not appear in these sources, so this page does not name peak months as fact. But a year-end squeeze following an annual quota running out could make late months tighter than their weather suggests. Ask your seller whether the park tickets for your dates are confirmed, and what the plan is if a site is full.

Which months are busiest on the water?

Free Two Roam, a travel blog, calls July and August the busiest months, suggests April, May, September or October for fewer crowds, and recommends booking ahead for the peak because popular boats have limited cabins. The Flying Nomads started looking about two weeks before a peak-season trip and found many reputable boats full. Neither is a visitor count, so treat the pattern as traveller experience. Under a daily limit, a busy month can also mean pressure on tickets as well as cabins, so settle both once your dates are firm. For how the park fared after the August 2026 earthquake, see our Komodo 3D2N FAQ.

What else do people ask about timing a Komodo boat trip?

When to do a Komodo boat trip?

Outside January to March if your main worry is whether the boat sails, since Lonely Planet advises avoiding those months. Within the rest of the year, choose according to whether heat, hill colour or wildlife timing matters most to you. The sources do not support naming one month.

When is Komodo dry season?

Lonely Planet calls December to March the short wet season, which leaves the rest of the year as the drier period. Weather2Travel's average of about 28 mm of rain in July shows how dry the middle of the year gets.

When not to go on a Komodo boat trip?

January to March is the period Lonely Planet advises against, and Komodo Resort, an operator, says December to March is when the harbourmaster is most likely to stop boats. A short trip with fixed flights is the most exposed to that.

When is peak season in Komodo?

Free Two Roam, a travel blog, names July and August as the busiest months, and monthly visitor counts are not published in these reports. CNN Indonesia did report that the 2026 annual quota was used up by August, though that is not a monthly visitor count.

When to book Komodo boat trip?

Start once your dates are firm. Given the reported quota limits late in 2026, it makes sense to ask well ahead about park tickets as well as about the boat, and to get both answers in writing.
