A Komodo open trip 3D2N puts you on a shared boat with strangers, on a fixed departure and a set programme. One Viator supplier capped a listing at 10 travellers, while one operator lists a boat with 32 to 35. Seek Sophie says most leave on Fridays. A private boat gives up the shared cost in exchange for more say over dates, pace and deck space, where the seller agrees.

What is a Komodo open trip 3D2N?

It is a seat on a departure someone else has scheduled. Phinisi Trip, an operator, calls its shared trip a random group of travellers, which is about as plain as the description gets. You share the boat, the crew and the programme, and the seller fills it from whoever books. Green Rinjani, also an operator, says its shared trip suits solo travellers and couples, and calls splitting boat, crew, fuel and meals the main cost benefit.

The phrase has no agreed definition. "Open trip", "shared tour" and "sailing tour" can all describe the same arrangement, while the word "small group" may mean almost anything. Sharing the boat also does not tell you whether you share a room. Seek Sophie, a booking platform, notes that not every boat offers dorms. So one open trip can mean a bunk among strangers and another a private cabin with your own bathroom. The operators named on this page are examples, and our Komodo 3D2N boat guide covers how vessels differ.

How large are shared groups?

Large enough that the number deserves its own question. The published examples below differ by a factor of three.

How large are shared groups?
PublisherGroup size statedDeparture days stated
Longlasting Trip, a Viator supplier (example only, listing shown as unavailable in November 2026)Capped at 10 travellersNot cited here
Green Rinjani, an operator12 to 16 participantsMonday and Friday
A shared boat launched in 2025, listed by Komodo Touristic, an operator32 to 35 passengers in 12 cabinsFridays
Phinisi Trip, an operatorA "random group", no number cited hereFriday to Sunday and Monday to Wednesday

That spread changes the trip in practical ways. Thirty-odd people on a boat is a different social event from ten, and we would expect longer waits at each landing. Groovy Mashed Potatoes, a travel blog, warns from personal experience that a group tour can feel crowded. Ask for the maximum on your departure and how many have booked so far, and remember the second number can change until the day you sail.

Which days do shared boats leave?

Mostly Friday, then Monday. Seek Sophie says most 3-day trips depart on Fridays with a few on Mondays. Green Rinjani departs Monday and Friday, and Phinisi Trip lists Friday to Sunday and Monday to Wednesday.

This is the constraint people notice last. If the boat leaves on Friday morning, you need to be in Labuan Bajo by Thursday night, since a same-morning arrival carries real risk, and the return lands you there on Sunday. A Monday boat means arriving on Sunday and being back on Wednesday. Before buying flights, check that your seller really runs the departure you are planning around, since a published pattern does not confirm a seat on a given date.

Availability also tightens at busy times. In peak season, The Flying Nomads, a travel blog, began looking a fortnight before travel and found many reputable boats already taken, as one personal account.

Do all three-day boats leave on Fridays and Mondays?

No, although those two days dominate the published patterns. Salam Ransel, an operator that listed 51 three-day boats in November 2026, shows most of them running Monday to Wednesday or Friday to Sunday. It also shows boats on Thursday to Saturday, Saturday to Monday and Tuesday to Thursday, plus others on request, and says each boat has its own departure days. So if your flights fall badly for a Friday start, ask sellers about other days before you move your dates. A published pattern is not a seat, so get the departure confirmed in writing.

What does private change?

Mostly control. Wikivoyage says shared departures follow a set programme while private charters may be more flexible. Seek Sophie casts private charters as the choice for flexibility and privacy, with a customisable itinerary. Groovy Mashed Potatoes describes a private boat giving them a top deck to itself.

What does private change?
QuestionShared boatPrivate boat
Departure daySet by the seller, often Friday or Monday in published examplesAgreed with the seller, subject to the boat being free
ProgrammeSet programmeMay be more flexible, per Wikivoyage
Who you sail withOther paying guestsYour own party
Pricing unitUsually per personOften per boat, per group or per night
FitSolo travellers and couples, per Green RinjaniThose wanting privacy and flexibility, per Seek Sophie

Flexibility has limits on either boat. Private guests still sail under the same park rules, ticket requirements and weather decisions, so a customised itinerary is a request and not a right.

The price table on this page shows why a direct comparison is harder than it looks. Its rows mix per-person, per-group, whole-boat, per-night and per-day figures from different kinds of source, and some are starting prices. Do not read across them as if they were like for like. To compare, take one specific private quote, divide it by your own party size, then add anything it leaves out, and set that against one specific shared quote treated the same way. On the published figures, a shared seat looks like the smaller outlay for one or two people, and the gap should narrow as your group grows. Our guide to the Komodo 3D2N cost walks through the items around a headline price. Shared or private, the format is the one our Komodo 3D2N overview describes.

Which published prices did we check?

Official fees and public third-party listings, each with its source and the month we checked it. These are not our prices or offers. Listings show starting prices that change often, operator figures are the operator's own, and what each price includes differs, so check the source before you rely on a figure.

Which questions separate two shared offers?

Two listings can look identical and describe very different trips. Exclusions are a good example: Green Rinjani leaves out hotel, insurance, park entrance and crew tips on its shared tour, and another seller's list may draw that line elsewhere. Wikivoyage's own list of things to ask covers departure and return times, how many stops a day, how much walking is required and sailing time. Add these:

  1. What is the maximum number of guests on this departure, and how many are booked?
  2. Is my bed in a shared room or a private cabin, and does it have its own bathroom?
  3. What is left out of the price, item by item?
  4. Is this date confirmed to sail, or does it need more bookings?
  5. What happens if I am the only solo guest in a shared room?
  6. Can the programme change, and who decides?

Question five matters most to people on their own. Our page on the solo Komodo boat trip looks at the rest of that situation. Check any shared offer against the Komodo 3D2N itinerary, the Komodo 3D2N route and the Komodo 3D2N booking checklist.

What else do people ask about shared and private boats?

Is a shared Komodo boat crowded?

It depends on the boat. Group sizes run from a capped 10 on one Viator listing to 32 to 35 on a boat Komodo Touristic lists, with Green Rinjani at 12 to 16 in between. One travel blog warns a group tour can feel crowded. Ask for the maximum on your departure.

What day do shared Komodo boats leave?

Seek Sophie says most 3-day trips depart on Fridays with a few on Mondays. Green Rinjani departs Monday and Friday, and Phinisi Trip lists Friday to Sunday and Monday to Wednesday. Confirm your date with the seller before you buy flights.

How much is a private Komodo boat?

Published figures appear in the price table on this page, each with its source and date. They use different units, including whole boat, per group and per night, so compare a written quote for your own party and dates.

Do Komodo boats have private cabins?

Some do. Seek Sophie says some boats have dorms and others only private rooms. Ask which type your booking is for.

Do Komodo boats have private bathrooms?

Some do. Seek Sophie describes private rooms with en-suite bathrooms on some boats, alongside shared dorm rooms on others. Ask whether the bathroom belongs to your cabin or is shared, and get the answer for the specific boat.

How do I reach the desk?

Say whether you lean shared or private, how many are travelling and which week you have in mind, on WhatsApp +62 811-3823-875 or by email. The desk can answer general questions and say what published sources state. For a specific boat, the seller's written answer is what counts. A seat or a boat is named only in a written offer, and a closure can still change it.
