A Komodo boat trip in rainy season is possible but carries real closure risk. Between late December 2025 and early February 2026, sailing approvals were stopped repeatedly, and Lonely Planet advises avoiding January to March. An operator names wind, more than rain, as the main threat. Book only if your dates can move and your written terms cover a stoppage.

How wet is it?

Very wet at the peak. Lonely Planet calls December to March the short wet season. Weather2Travel averages for Labuan Bajo show the contrast with the dry months:

How wet is it?
MeasureWet monthDry month
Average rainfallJanuary: about 396 mmJuly: about 28 mm
Days with some rainJanuary: 22August and September: 1 each

A day with some rain is not a day of rain from dawn to dusk. Komodo Resort, an operator, says rain often comes as heavy showers in the afternoon or at night. That is one operator's description. Averages cannot tell you about a particular week, either. For the other months of the year, including how December and March compare with January, see our page on Labuan Bajo weather by month. Weather2Travel's averages put December at about 298 mm and March at about 310 mm, so the edges of the season sit close to the January peak on rainfall.

How often do boats stop?

In the most recent wet season, repeatedly. The dated sequence is set out on our Labuan Bajo sailing ban page.

Taken together, RRI and CNN Indonesia describe more than five weeks in which the only reported opening was a single limited week. Anyone holding a fixed three-day slot in that stretch had poor odds. That is one season, and it does not predict the next one. It is still the most detailed record we can point to. Komodo Resort names December to March as the likeliest period for stops, and Lonely Planet tells readers to skip January to March because some operators stop running.

Note the two different reasons a trip can vanish: an authority closing the water, and an operator choosing not to run. Reported closures were extended in steps, so the first can change at short notice.

Why would a boat stop if rain is not the problem?

Because the sea matters more than the sky. Komodo Resort blames wind more than rain, and says swell lands north in the wet season and south in the dry. Those are one operator's observations. Ask your seller how rough a February crossing has been on your route. If motion troubles you, read our page on Komodo boat trip seasickness before you commit.

What do you gain in these months?

Green landscapes, and possibly mantas, by some accounts. Lonely Planet says hillsides turn green from December to March and that dry months brown them, which changes the look of any viewpoint photograph considerably.

Seek Sophie, a booking platform, calls December to March manta season, with no guarantee of a sighting. The Marine Megafauna Foundation says mantas are present year-round, which is a different claim, and our guide to Manta Point on a Komodo boat trip sets out the conflict, so we would not base a wet-season booking on mantas alone. Ask for evidence behind any claim of quieter boats or easier availability in these months.

How should you protect your money?

Assume that no standard refund exists. ASITA's provincial head told CNN Indonesia that travellers were left with big problems because no standard refund rules exist. Terms vary as well: Longlasting Trip, a supplier on Viator, listed one product as non-refundable. Read your written terms. No source here sets out your legal rights.

Before paying a deposit for these months, get answers in writing to the following:

  • If the harbourmaster stops sailing, do I get money back, a credit or a new date?
  • If the boat leaves late or cuts a night, how is the difference calculated?
  • Who holds my money, and how quickly would it come back?
  • Does my hotel in town follow the same terms, or its own?
  • Are my flights changeable if the boat moves by a few days?

Keep spare days at the end of your stay, and read your travel insurance for how it treats a closure ordered by an authority. Salam Ransel, an operator, says comprehensive travel insurance that also covers cancellation is required for all its trips, which is one seller's rule. Ask whether your own seller requires cover too.

Who should avoid a Komodo boat trip in rainy season?

Skip these months if this is your one chance at Komodo, if your leave is fixed, or if flights and hotels are non-refundable. A traveller who would be badly affected by losing the trip should choose a drier period, and our guide to the best time for a Komodo 3D2N compares the alternatives.

The months make more sense for someone already in the region with open dates, little money committed, and a real interest in a green landscape. For that traveller, a stoppage is an annoyance. The reported closures clustered from late December to early February, but that is one season, and both Lonely Planet and Komodo Resort treat the risk as running into March, so do not assume any month in the window is clear.

What do travellers ask about the wet months?

Is Komodo closed in February?

Ask your seller about any closure notice close to your date. What has stopped trips is sailing closures: CNN Indonesia reported one for tourist vessels running to 4 February 2026. Check the position for your own date.

Do Komodo boats run in February?

Some may, without any assurance. Lonely Planet says some operators stop running trips from January to March, and the harbourmaster can halt sailing as well. Ask the seller what happens to your booking if either occurs.

When is Komodo rainy season?

Lonely Planet gives December to March as the short wet season. Weather2Travel's averages put January at about 396 mm of rain across 22 days with some rain, far above the dry months.

How rough is Komodo in February?

Komodo Resort, an operator, says wind is the main risk and that wet-season swell lands in the north of the area. Ask your operator which route it would run.

Is February good for Komodo trip?

Only if you can absorb a cancellation. You may get green hills, but the 2026 closures ran into that month and refund terms are not standard. With fixed dates, a drier month is the lower-risk choice.

How do I reach the desk?

Considering these months anyway? Tell the desk your dates and how flexible they are: WhatsApp +62 811-3823-875 or email. It cannot predict harbourmaster decisions or promise that any boat will sail. Since requests can end in a paid booking, we have a commercial interest in your trip. Refund and rescheduling terms count only when written into an offer that also names the price, any fee and the contracting company.
