Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Fees and fares change, and they are third-party figures, not our offers.

Komodo or Rinca is usually the boat's decision, not yours: Seek Sophie says itineraries visit one or the other depending on the boat. Komodo offers walks of three lengths, according to Lonely Planet. Rinca has a boardwalk and museum, with wheelchair access, and fewer day operators. If one suits you better, ask before you book.
Komodo or Rinca: why might a boat go to one and not the other?
The sources do not give a single reason. Three things may play a part, on our reading, and each is worth asking about.
Programme design. Seek Sophie, a booking platform, treats the landing as something that varies by boat, with one of the two islands on the programme. A three-day programme has to fit Padar, snorkel stops and one dragon landing, and our comparison of Komodo 3D2N routes shows how little room is left. Whether a boat can do both is a question for that seller.
Who else goes there. Lonely Planet says Rinca was opened to cruise ship visitors and that fewer day operators go there. So the day-boat pressure may be different at each landing, though that one line does not tell you how busy either place will be on your date.
Site limits. Komodo Resort, an operator, says site limits are 250 a day at Loh Liang on Komodo Island and 150 at Loh Buaya on Rinca Island. Those numbers are not confirmed from an official page, and another operator, Samara, publishes a different figure for Padar, so treat the whole set with care. If limits like these apply, a landing may be chosen partly by what the boat can secure for that date.
Whichever you end up with, you are looking at the same species. The park authority counts five main islands as Komodo dragon habitat among at least 142 small islands, and Wikipedia lists Komodo, Rinca, Flores, Gili Dasami and Gili Motang as the islands where the dragon is endemic. Numbers are a source of dispute: UNESCO estimates about 5,700 dragons, while Indonesia's tourism site writes of the remaining 3,000 and says the largest populations are in the park, particularly Rinca. Neither figure is a dated census we can point you to, so we do not pick one. IUCN World Heritage Outlook says the dragon was listed as Endangered on the Red List in 2021.

How do the walks differ?
This is the clearest difference between the two, and it comes mainly from Lonely Planet.
| What to compare | Komodo Island | Rinca Island |
|---|---|---|
| Walk type | Three lengths: 1.5 km, 2 km and 4 km (Lonely Planet) | Boardwalk (Lonely Planet) |
| Wheelchair access | Not described in the sources cited here | Wheelchair-accessible boardwalk (Lonely Planet) |
| Museum | Not described in the sources cited here | Yes (Lonely Planet) |
| Ranger | Visitors are paired with a ranger with a forked pole (Lonely Planet) | Mandatory (Lonely Planet) |
| Feel | Trail walk within the park fee, then on to snorkel stops after lunch (Lonely Planet) | "Sanitised", with cruise ship visitors (Lonely Planet) |
| Landing name in some sources | Loh Liang | Loh Buaya |
Two details are easy to miss. Lonely Planet says the park entry fee covers one of three walks on Komodo, so ask which length your group will do. Lonely Planet also says visitors move to snorkel stops after lunch, so a landing can be one part of a full day and not an open-ended visit.
"Sanitised" is one guidebook's word, and it is a judgement rather than a measurement. A traveller who wants a raw-feeling trail may read it as a warning, while someone who needs a level surface may read it as the main attraction.
How do the two stops suit different travellers?
These are our editorial suggestions, based on the differences above.
- Wheelchair users and people with limited mobility: Rinca is the only one of the two described as having a wheelchair-accessible boardwalk. Getting on and off a boat is a separate question, so raise it with the seller before anything else.
- Travellers who want a longer walk: Komodo's 4 km option is the longest published here. Check that your group can actually take it.
- Anyone who wants context: Rinca's museum adds something beyond the walk itself.
- People trying to dodge day-boat traffic: Lonely Planet's note on fewer day operators favours Rinca, but its note on cruise ships cuts the other way, so ask about your date.
- First-timers with no strong preference: let the rest of the route decide. A good landing slot matters more than the name of the island.
Can you visit both in three days? Nothing in the sources rules it out, but Seek Sophie's description points to one or the other, so ask rather than assume.
What ranger rules apply?
Expect to walk with one on both islands. Lonely Planet says visitors are paired with a ranger armed with a forked pole on Komodo and that a ranger is mandatory on Rinca. Samara, an operator, goes further and says a licensed ranger must accompany every group on Komodo, Rinca and Padar. It also says visitors should tell the ranger privately about open wounds or menstruation. That is an operator's guidance, and you can raise the matter quietly and early.
KSU Taman Nasional Komodo, the guide cooperative, dates from 2006 and has 50 naturalist guides, per the park authority. Lonely Planet calls attacks on humans rare, with a low risk, while noting dragons are capable predators, so follow the ranger's instructions on where to stand. The wider rules on trails and contact with wildlife are on our page about Komodo National Park rules.
Is the ranger charge in your package? It varies, so look for it by name in the inclusions. The price table on this page shows one figure reported by an operator, which is that operator's own number and may not match what you are asked to pay.
What time of day suits a landing?
Lonely Planet says early morning and late afternoon are the best times for dragon sightings. It also says sightings are less common in June and July and that April to June is good as vegetation dies back. Those are general tendencies, and no one can promise a sighting at either island. A midday slot is not a reason to walk away from a boat, but it is a fair question when you compare two offers. For how the months differ more broadly, see our guide to the best time for a Komodo 3D2N.
When you write to a seller, ask four things: which island, which walk length, what time the landing is planned and whether the ranger is included. Those answers tell you more than a line saying "dragon trek" in an itinerary.
Which published prices did we check?
Official fees and public third-party listings, each with its source and the month we checked it. These are not our prices or offers. Listings show starting prices that change often, operator figures are the operator's own, and what each price includes differs, so check the source before you rely on a figure.
| Item | Published price | Source | Checked |

| Ranger, Komodo or Rinca, per group of up to five (Komodo Resort, operator-reported) | IDR 200,000 | komodoresort.com | Nov 2026 |
What do people ask about the two landings?
Is a ranger required on Rinca?
Yes, according to Lonely Planet, which calls a ranger mandatory on Rinca. Samara, an operator, also says a licensed ranger must accompany every group there, as well as on Komodo and Padar.
Why do some 3D2N boats skip Rinca?
Seek Sophie says itineraries visit either Komodo or Rinca depending on the boat, and Lonely Planet says fewer day operators go to Rinca. Ask your seller why its programme lands where it does.
Does a 3D2N stop at Komodo or Rinca?
Usually one or the other. Seek Sophie, a booking platform, says it depends on the boat. Check the written itinerary for the island's name.
How long is the walk on Komodo island?
Lonely Planet says walks come in three lengths: 1.5 km, 2 km and 4 km, and that the park entry fee covers one of them. Ask which your group will take, since the choice may be made for everyone on the boat.
Are ranger charges included in a boat package?
It depends on the seller, so look for the ranger by name in the inclusions. The price table on this page shows one figure reported by an operator, and your own quote may differ.

How do I reach the desk?
Tell the desk which landing you would prefer and why, on WhatsApp +62 811-3823-875 or by email. The desk can answer general questions and say what published sources state. For a specific boat, the seller's written answer is what counts. The island, the walk and the date are only stated in a written offer, as a plan, and wildlife is never part of that.
Send the desk your dates, group size, and boat preference. The desk replies in writing.
