Sourced figures: prices in the table carry their source and check month. Fees and fares change, and they are third-party figures, not our offers.
On a Komodo 3D2N, a Padar sunrise starts before dawn: one operator sets a 04:30 wake call and a booking platform describes leaving around 5am. Sleeping aboard is what makes that possible, though published climb times, session windows and visitor limits all conflict. Confirm the plan for your date with the boat, in writing.
Why does sleeping aboard help with a Padar sunrise on a Komodo 3D2N?
It puts you near the island when the day starts. Lonely Planet says sleeping in the park lets visitors reach the Padar viewpoint before crowds and get to Komodo earlier in the day. That is the main case for two nights on a boat if the view is what you came for.
Wikipedia places Padar between Komodo and Rinca, describes it as the third-largest island in the park and notes its four deep bays. The morning has a cost, however. You give up sleep, climb in the dark and start a full day of stops with a short night behind you. Guests who struggle with early starts should weigh that honestly.
Night movement adds a further wrinkle. A January 2026 harbourmaster order, reported by Antara, barred night movement in park waters and named the Padar Strait. A boat bound by that limit would need to be positioned before dark instead of sailing through the night. Ask your operator whether the limit still applies and how the boat reaches Padar on your date. Our guide to Komodo 3D2N routes shows where the stop tends to fall.
How long does the climb take?
Plan for the longest published figure, about 45 minutes, because the sources do not agree and the higher number is the safer basis for a dark start.
| Source | Time given | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Lonely Planet (publisher) | 15 minutes | Steep, to the highest viewpoint |
| Labuan Bajo Tourism (operator) | 30 to 45 minutes | 838 steps |
| Seek Sophie (booking platform) | About 45 minutes | Fairly easy |
| Free Two Roam (travel blog) | Around 30 minutes | Roughly 900 steps, with people everywhere |
None of them explains the gap. Fitness, stops for photographs and how crowded the path is would each plausibly change the time, but that is our reasoning and not a measured finding. Note also that "steep" and "fairly easy" are competing descriptions of a similar walk. If stairs are a problem for your knees or your breathing, count on the 838 steps and let the steep description be your guide.
Labuan Bajo Tourism advises bringing a headlamp and closed shoes. Our packing list for a Komodo boat trip covers the rest of what belongs in a small day bag.
What time do boats start the morning?
Earlier than most guests expect. Labuan Bajo Tourism describes a 04:30 wake call and a sunrise window of 05:00 to 07:30. Seek Sophie describes setting off around 5am. Both are their own accounts of how a morning runs, and a boat's actual call depends on where it anchored and on the park's timing that day.
Ask the crew the evening before when you need to be ready, and whether you will go ashore by tender or from a jetty. Also ask what happens if you decide to stay in bed: when the boat moves on, and whether another stop replaces the climb.
How do session windows work?
Visits are timed, though the public record does not fully tie the windows to Padar. The windows Kompas attributes to the minister start at 05:00, 08:00 and 15:00, each lasting three hours. The park authority's tariff and capacity page lists windows that include those same three times in WITA, but its text does not name each site beside each window, so that page alone cannot assign a window to Padar.
Samara, an operator, does say Padar runs three sessions. Read together, the reports suggest a sunrise climb falls in the first window, which fits the 5am starts described above. That is our inference, so ask your operator to state the session booked for your group.
This matters because the park protocol prohibits trekking outside the timed entry period or off designated trails, and prohibits ignoring officers or naturalist guides. Follow the guide and stay on the built path. The price table on this page shows one operator-reported ranger charge at Padar, which is worth asking about when you check what your fare includes.
How many people can be on Padar?
Per-session and daily limits for Padar come only from operators, they conflict, and the official tariff and capacity page shows time windows without site numbers.
- Samara says no more than 300 people per session. Across three sessions that would allow up to 900 a day.
- Komodo Resort, also an operator, says 60 a day at Padar.
- Antara, quoting the park authority, says a 2022 study set Padar's carrying capacity at 17,885 visitors a year. Spread evenly, that is about 49 a day, though the report does not present it as a daily cap. Another report attributes that breakdown differently, so reports differ here too.
Samara's 300 per session and Komodo Resort's 60 a day are too far apart to plan around, and they tell you to ask how your session was secured instead of assuming a slot. Things may also change: Antara reported in April 2026 that new trekking routes and in-out docks are planned on Padar, and that the figure will be evaluated. Our page on the Komodo visitor quota covers the park-wide limit.
Will a sunrise start give you an empty summit?
Do not count on it. Lonely Planet makes the case that a night in the park beats the crowds to the viewpoint, but a traveller account shows the limit of that idea. Free Two Roam, a travel blog, reports a sunrise climb of around 30 minutes and roughly 900 steps, with people everywhere, and calls it far from peaceful. Other boats sleep in the park too, so an early start buys you the light more surely than solitude. Step counts differ as well: Labuan Bajo Tourism says 838 and Salam Ransel, an operator, about 800. No source here says a later climb is quieter, so if crowds are your main concern, ask the seller how it handles busy sessions.
Is sunrise the only good time?
No. Labuan Bajo Tourism says one of its boats climbs Padar at golden hour instead of sunrise, while another of its boats stops there in the late afternoon. Labuan Bajo Tourism's late-afternoon stop could fall in the third window Kompas reports, but no source ties that window to Padar.
Padar at sunrise or sunset is a choice with no sourced winner. Lonely Planet's point about beating the crowds favours early morning. A late climb keeps your sleep intact and may suit anyone who would rather not take stairs in the dark, but you should ask about the return in fading light. No operator is obliged to offer either on your date, and weather and session rules can override any plan. If the sunrise itself is your reason for going, ask before you book which session the boat holds. A sunrise climb is one morning in a longer plan, set out in our Komodo 3D2N overview.
What do hikers ask about Padar?
What shoes for Padar?
Closed shoes, as Labuan Bajo Tourism advises, along with a headlamp for the dark start. Flip-flops are a poor match for hundreds of steps climbed before daylight.
How many steps on Padar?
Sources differ. Labuan Bajo Tourism, an operator, says 838, Salam Ransel, another operator, about 800, and the travel blog Free Two Roam roughly 900. None is presented as a surveyed number.
How long is the Padar hike?
Sources disagree. Lonely Planet says a steep 15 minutes to the highest viewpoint, Labuan Bajo Tourism says 30 to 45 minutes, Free Two Roam, a travel blog, says around 30 and Seek Sophie says about 45. Allow the longest time when you plan a dark start.
What time do boats leave for Padar sunrise?
Labuan Bajo Tourism describes a 04:30 wake call and Seek Sophie describes setting off around 5am. Ask your crew for the real time on your boat.
Are Padar Island trails marked?
Do not rely on markings. The park protocol does require you to stay on designated trails and follow officers and guides, so stick with your guide and the built path.
Which published prices did we check?
Official fees and public third-party listings, each with its source and the month we checked it. These are not our prices or offers. Listings show starting prices that change often, operator figures are the operator's own, and what each price includes differs, so check the source before you rely on a figure.
| Item | Published price | Source | Checked |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ranger, Padar, per group (Komodo Resort, operator-reported) | IDR 150,000 | komodoresort.com | Nov 2026 |

How do I reach the desk?
If Padar timing decides your trip, say so when you write to the desk: WhatsApp +62 811-3823-875 or email. The desk can answer general questions and say what published sources state. For a specific boat, the seller's written answer is what counts, and sessions and permits are outside the desk's control. Because a request can turn into a paid booking, we have a commercial stake, and only a written offer naming price, fee and contracting company binds anyone.
Send the desk your dates, group size, and boat preference. The desk replies in writing.
